Sus estudios los curso en la Universitario de la República, recibiendose de Doctor en Derecho y Ciencias Sociales.Fue profesor en varias universidades latinoamericanas. Ardao fue uno de los principales referentes del pensamiento y la intelectualidad uruguayos del siglo xx. De 1968 a 1972 fue miembro del Consejo Central de la Universidad y Decano de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias. Formó parte de la Delegación del Uruguay en la Asamblea de UNESCO (París, 1958) y de la Delegación de la Universidad de la República por Convenio con UNESCO (París, 1967). Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universidad de la República. En su obra se distinguen dos vertientes: la atención dedicada a la historia del pensamiento latinoamericano, que Ardao analiza desde su propia originalidad, y el planteamiento de una filosofía propia. Entre sus obras destacan: Espacio e inteligencia (1976), Espiritualismo y positivismo en el Uruguay (1950), España en el origen del nombre América Latina (Montevideo, 1992) y Lógica y metafísica en Feijoo (Montevideo, 1997). Arturo Ardao falleció el 22 de septiembre de 2003 en Montevideo.
