Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universidad de la República.\r\nEn su obra se distinguen dos vertientes: la atención dedicada a la historia del pensamiento latinoamericano, que Ardao analiza desde su propia originalidad, y el planteamiento de una filosofía propia. Además fue Decano de dicha Facultad por dos mandatos: 1989-1993, 1993-1997, e integrante del Consejo Directivo Central (CDC) de la Universidad de la República entre los años 1988-1997.\r\n\r\nEl cultivo profesional de la Historia lo ha concentrado principalmente (salvo en el período de la dictadura cívico-militar uruguaya 1973-1985) en la mencionada Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación. Ha sido Profesor Titular (Grado 5) de Historia de la Historiografía, y de Teoría y Metodología de la Historia, Investigador en régimen de Dedicación Total (DT), Director del Departamento de Historiología, Coordinador del Instituto de Ciencias Históricas, Director del Centro de Estudios Gallegos (Cegal), Profesor de cursos de especialización para graduados, Profesor de cursos y seminarios de postgrados, Tutor de proyectos de investigación, Director de tesis doctorales y de maestría, integrante de tribunales para juzgar tesis de maestría y de doctorado, y evaluador de distintos proyectos institucionales, como por ejemplo: de la Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowschip Program, de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, proyectos del programa Ecos (proyectos de cooperación con Francia), etc.\r\n\r\nSe ha desempeñado también en otras instituciones uruguayas, públicas y privadas de educación superior. Ubicado geográficamente en la actual ciudad vieja, el casco antiguo de la ciudad de Montevideo, ocupando la totalidad de la manzana 2400m2, entre las calles, Monteverde, Cerrito, Piedras y Juan Lindolfo Cuestas.Este edificio fue diseñado por el Ingeniero Arquitecto Juan Tosi en 1888. Con una estructura en torno a un gran patio central, con subsuelo y cuatro niveles que abarcaban todo el perímetro de la manzana. En 1938 obtuvo el título de Doctor en Derecho y Ciencias\r\nSociales. Comenzó la labor de enseñanza antes de graduarse, dictando clases de Historia\r\nUniversal en el Instituto Normal de Señoritas entre 1930 y 1934 e Introducción al Derecho en\r\nel Instituto A. Vázquez Acevedo.\r\nEn la Facultad de Derecho y Ciencias Sociales enseñó Derecho Constitucional desde 1939 hasta\r\n1957. Durante el renovador decanato de Eduardo J. Couture, Justino Jiménez de Aréchaga\r\ntiene un papel significativo por los nuevos planteos acerca del derecho constitucional, además,\r\npuesto en marcha el Instituto de Derecho Público, Jiménez de Aréchaga inició un curso de\r\nlectura de clásicos. Como reconocimiento a su excelente labor docente, recibió el título de\r\nProfesor Emérito de dicha Facultad en 1957 y, relacionado con esto tanto como por la\r\ntemática, que abordara como por sus enfoques específicos, mereció el premio UNESCO de\r\nenseñanza de Derechos Humanos en 1979.\r\nEn 1945 se instaló la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias, Aréchaga, uno de los perseverantes\r\nimpulsores de su creación, integró el Primer Consejo, junto a Carlos Vez Ferreira como\r\ndirector, Eduardo García de Zúñiga, Dardo Regules, José Pedro Segundo, Emilio Oribe y\r\nClemente Estable. Sus gestiones como consejero, llevó a la creación del primer instituto de\r\nInvestigaciones Históricas, en la UdelaR, en 1947. En 1951 fue elegido para asumir el decanato\r\nde la Facultad, en tiempos clave de pleno ímpetu, organizando el funcionamiento docente y\r\nadministrativo y programación de enseñanza en la casa de estudios. Pero Jiménez de Aréchaga\r\nestuvo poco tiempo al frente de ésta, presentó renuncia en 1951.\r\nParticipó en congresos y conferencias de Derecho en el país y colaboró en trabajos jurídicos\r\nnacionales y extranjeros. Ocupó la vicepresidencia del Instituto Uruguayo de Derecho\r\nInternacional, integrando también la Academia Nacional de Letras y el Instituto Histórico y\r\nGeográfico del Uruguay.\r\nEn el terreno político, ocupó la Subsecretaría del Ministerio del Interior en 1943. En su círculo de amigos    contó con personalidades como Rafael Dieste, Carlos Vaz Ferreira, Jules Supervielle, Susana Soca, Juan Parra del Riego, Giselda Zani, Enrique Casaravilla Lemos y Joaquín Torres García. Tuvo gran amistad con Juana de Ibarbourou.\r\nOcupó la Cátedra de Estética y Composición Literaria en la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias. Fue profesora de Literatura en Secundaria y en el Instituto Normal. Enseñó en la Universidad de la República, Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, y Universidad Metropolitana de México. \r\n\r\nOfreció conferencias de su especialidad en el Boston Colloquium for Philosophy of Science, en la AAAS (San Francisco), en el Instituto Poincaré y en la Ecole Normale, ambos en Paris. Publicó más de una docena de libros como autor o editor, formó parte de los consejos editoriales de diez revistas internacionales, y fue miembro honorario de la Asociación de Filosofía e Historia de la Ciencia. \r\n\r\nEx Decano de la entonces Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias, electo por la Asamblea del Claustro para el período 1972-1976, vio interrumpido su mandato por el golpe de Estado y la intervención de la Universidad en 1973. «Allí sufrió los embates de la prisión y el exilio. Con el retorno de la democracia, en 1985, Mario Otero volvió a conducir la Facultad hasta 1989.
